Covid-19 cases in South Africa have surpassed 1.6-million, as the country recorded a total of 1 602 031 confirmed cases on Wednesday.
The country recorded 2 759 new Covid-19 infections and 72 new deaths by Wednesday, according to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.
The total number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol was 430 730.
Gauteng recorded the most confirmed active cases with 5 651, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 5 591, and the Free State with 4 984.
The recovery rate stands at 95%, with 1 519 734 recoveries recorded.
To date, 10 968 926 tests have been completed, with 37 020 conducted in the past 24 hours, Mkhize said.
Mkhize also reported a further 72 Covid-19-related deaths, of which six were recorded in the Eastern Cape, 13 in the Free State, 27 in Gauteng, five in KwaZulu-Natal, five in Mpumalanga, four in the Northern Cape, and 12 in the Western Cape.
This brings the total death toll to 54 968.
"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize said.
