As Democratic Alliance (DA) constituency heads for Drakenstein Municipal Area, we would like to extend our congratulations to the Mayor, Councillor Conrad Poole, and the Municipal Manager, Dr Johan Leibbrandt, for the excellent audit report of Drakenstein Municipality. Congratulations also go to the rest of the team, both members of the mayoral committee and officials, and in particular to the deputy mayor and mayoral committee member for finance, Councillor Gert Combrink and the chief financial officer, Mr Bradley Brown and his team.
We have seen over the past number of years that the Auditor-General is raising the pass requirements every year and that many municipalities have fallen back and thus lost their clean audit status. We are therefore particularly grateful that Drakenstein was able to maintain this achievement. We are all the more grateful since the past year has been marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, which not only curtailed the normal activities of the administration but also required rapid adjustments in the activities of the municipality.
Drakenstein Municipality, for example, quickly stepped in to assist soup kitchens and other support actions - something that has traditionally not been the mandate of local authorities. In the process, the limits of service delivery were tested.
Voters would like to see a good account of their taxes and service fees. Administrations under the leadership of the DA stand head and shoulders above those under the control of any other political party. We believe that the voters in Drakenstein will also recognize this achievement and again, when they go to the polls later this year, will place their trust in the DA.
