Al Jama-ah’s Thapelo Amad has been elected the new executive mayor of Johannesburg.

He beat ActionSA councillor Funzi Ngobeni and former mayor Mpho Phalatse with 138 votes.

Phalatse received 81 votes and Ngobeni received 46.

Phalatse was ousted in a motion of no confidence on Thursday. Amad was voted in with the support of an ANC-led coalition.
