Three (3) municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, 14 June 2023.

The by-elections will be contested by twelve candidates from seven (7) political parties.

In the Eastern Cape

Ward 05 in the Kou-Kamma Municipality – EC109, will be contested by four candidates:

1. Channon Eugina May of the African National Congress (ANC);

2. Frederick Alexander Uithaler of the Democratic Alliance (DA);

3.Thabiso September Ntukantu of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and

4. Lloyd Garth Saile of the Patriotic Alliance (PA). 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 47,18%.

Ward 02 in Port St Johns Municipality – EC154, will be contested by four candidates:

1. Patric Nomarhobo of the ANC,

2. Mehla Elliot Xamba of the African Transformation Movement,

3. Chris Tembalihle Xangayi of the DA; and

4. Sivuyile Ndumela of the EFF. 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 55,23%.

In KwaZulu-Natal

Ward 02 in the uMvoti Municipality – KZN245, will be contested by four candidates:

1. Philani Godfrey Mavundla of the Abantu Batho Congress;

2. Thobelani Dan Khumalo of the ANC; 

3. Welcome Smanga Bhengu of the EFF and

4. Zwakushiwo Michael Zondi of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 52,69%.
