The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) on Monday stated that camera images of Gauteng e-toll road use were available to those with and without an e-toll account.

Sanral explained that registered users could log into the e-toll management system online to check any queries around their vehicles being on a toll road at a specific time, by accessing account details, including photographs of them travelling on the Gauteng highway network.

Sanral communications manager Vusi Mona added that road users who were not registered could also request camera images from Sanral.

“Road users [with] e-toll transactions older than seven days are also able to manage their e-toll transactions online and view these transaction details, without having to register. [They] merely [have to create] a username and password,” he said, adding that producing evidence of a traffic violation was, therefore, not an issue.

Engineering News Online was not able to immediately obtain clarification on how this system would function.

Sanral further reminded road users that the owner of a vehicle was responsible for any traffic-related issues as the law accepted that the owner was the driver.

“Additionally, the owner is also responsible to ensure that the contact details on the vehicle registration remains current. When the ownership of a vehicle is changed, as in the case of the sale of a vehicle, the original owner’s name will remain on the vehicle database until a new registration has been completed,” the roads agency said.

Mona further said, to make certain there was no fraud as far as false number plates or any such conduct was concerned, there had to be proper processes in place.

“Sanral is meticulous in this regard because it has the best interests of its customers – the road users – at heart,” he concluded.
