A repatriation operation turned tragic on Tuesday, when a bus carrying dozens of foreign nationals crashed near the Beitbridge Port of Entry, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.
The Border Management Authority (BMA) confirmed the incident, expressing “deep sadness” over the accident, this as South Africa faced multiple protests across the country against illegal immigration.
Thousands of people submitted themselves for voluntary repatriation for fears of violence.
According to the BMA, the bus was routinely transporting 65 passengers from Durban to Musina for processing by immigration officials before completing their repatriation through the Beitbridge border post.
The exact cause of the crash is currently unknown. Relevant law enforcement authorities have launched an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
According to preliminary reports, the driver of the bus tragically lost his life at the scene, and seven passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Emergency medical personnel treated the injured on-site before transferring them to nearby medical facilities for further care.
Following the crash, officials from the BMA, the Musina local municipality, the South African Police Service, Musina Traffic Management authorities and emergency services immediately reacted by providing aid at the scene and ensuring that the situation was managed safely and efficiently.
Acting Commissioner of the BMA Major-General (Retired) David Chilembe extended his condolences to those affected.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. On behalf of the Border Management Authority, I extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased driver during this difficult time. We also wish the injured passengers a full and speedy recovery and thank all emergency responders and law enforcement officials who acted swiftly to provide assistance at the scene,” said Chilembe.
Officials confirmed that plans are underway to facilitate the safe continuation of the repatriation process for the remaining passengers.
