He said the councillor sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police said a full scale investigation was underway while forensic experts, accompanied by members of the K-9 Unit, were gathering evidence on scene since late on Monday night.

Police said an autopsy would be conducted during the week to determine the possible cause of death.

Police are appealing to anyone who can assist with information which may lead to an arrest to contact Warrant Officer Reginus Quine, at 044 302 6652, 082 791 7676 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
