The Democratic Alliance (DA) has shot down a motion brought by the African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape legislature to force Premier Alan Winde to provide details on the inquiry into suspended Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz.
The ANC had wanted Winde to appear before the Standing Committee on the Premier and Constitutional Affairs within seven days.
ANC MPL and leader of the opposition in the legislature Cameron Dugmore put forward the motion to force the premier to explain the terms of reference for the inquiry into Fritz.
Dugmore said the report back from the premier should happen within one week, even though the independent report had not yet been finalised.
Dugmore told the committee, "The issue that we have raised – that the premier has not addressed, or the chairperson – is the terms of reference for this inquiry. Members of the public, MPLs we are in the dark, and we want to be briefed."
"This is another example of the DA protecting their own and continuing with their cover-up of the Fritz matter instead of putting clean and good governance first. By now we know the DA stands for double standards," Dugmore said.
None of the committee members seconded the ANC's motion.
Winde suspended Fritz last month amid allegations of sexual misconduct. Advocate Jennifer Williams has been appointed to conduct an independent investigation into the allegations against Fritz.
On Wednesday, the Standing Committee on the Premier and Constitutional Affairs elected MPL Lorraine Botha as its new chairperson after her predecessor, Ricardo Mackenzie, was granted leave for a month.
In response to Dugmore, DA MPL and chairperson of the standing committee on community safety Reagen Allen said an urgent meeting would be called as soon as the premier had received the investigation report.
"The premier will be invited, and any member will be able to interrogate any questions. I want to add, it is important for the ANC in the Western Cape to show some restraint and patience as the process unfolds," he said.
Botha said the matter will be heard before a joint sitting of the standing committees on community safety and the premier and constitutional affairs.
Allan said the allegations were serious and that the report should first be concluded before calling the premier to answer questions.
