The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is shocked to learn that the ANC is rejecting a recommendation from its Provincial Integrity Commission to fire Merafong Mayor, Maphefo Mogale-Letsie over her involvement in the now non-functional VBS Mutual Bank.

The ANC Gauteng Provincial Integrity Commission recommended that the Mayor should be fired for her involvement in unlawful deposits of R50 million in VBS Mutual Bank.

The fact that the ANC is rejecting the recommendations from their own Commission indicates that they are protecting those implicated in illegal activities at the expense of our residents.

Since 2011, Merafong has had at least seven acting or permanent municipal managers which has exasperated the dire financial status of the municipality.

The lack of fiscal management has had a negative impact on the day-to-day running of the municipality leaving residents in the lurch.

The DA Merafong Caucus will be tabling a motion of no confidence in the Mayor as a matter of urgency.
