The authorisation for the project and the recommended route alignment that was approved by the original record of decision, was endorsed by the Gauteng MEC for Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Land Affairs.
The record of decision was amended following numerous appeals.
A major sticking point concerning the Gautrain, was the impact the project would have on several houses in the Muckleneuk area, Pretoria. The houses were considered to have provincial heritage importance and concerns were raised over the houses being destroyed.
However, the amended record of decision has decided that the Gautrain railway line shall be built in such a way as to preserve at least two out of the three houses.
No construction work on the project may start until an appeal period for the approval of the draft final design, construction and operation and maintenance EMP has passed.
