The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni has voted against the budget presented by the ANC-led coalition which would have pushed cash-strapped residents further into financial despair through increased rates and taxes while failing to address the systemic collapse of the City. The budget subsequently failed to pass.

This ANC budget would have:

• Increased water tariffs by 11%;
• Increased sanitation fees by 8.35%;
• Increased electricity by 9% and;
• Increase refuse removal by 4%.

These hikes, coupled with successive interest rate hikes and fuel price increases, would have only made life more difficult for residents in the City.

The DA is vindicated in our decision as the overwhelming majority of councillors used common sense to reject a budget which will do nothing to fix the rot created by successive ANC governments.

Only the DA has a credible plan to stabilise the City’s finances while offering financial relief to residents and business to get Ekurhuleni working.

Come the local government election on 4 November 2026, residents of Ekurhuleni will show this failing ANC government the door and usher in a DA government that works for all its people.
