The Agricultural Food and Allied Democratic Workers Union (AFADWU), will be holding its inaugural National Congress on the 25 to 26 October 2019 at The Aviator Hotel, Kempton Park, Gauteng Province. This to fulfil its constitutional mandate and legal obligation.

AFADWU is a progressive trade union that was established after the dismissal of an army of worker leaders, shopstewards and officials by the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) in 2016.  FAWU subsequently disaffiliated from COSATU in 2016 based on a Congress decision. On the 17th April 2018 AFADWU was legally registered with the Department Of Labour.

The industries we organise in are characterised by employing poor and vulnerable workers, with:

  • low wages,
  • limited social benefits, skills development and at times no access to quality health care and security of tenure.
  • huge number of unorganised workers across all industries.
  • most of these workers not enjoying the protection of labour laws.

Some of the items to be discussed for possible adoption will comprise policy formulation, socio-economic and political considerations, affiliation to labour federations, including affiliation to COSATU.

The congress will be addressed among others by the Minister of Employment and Labour, Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development and the Minister of Trade and Industry. COSATU, the South African Communist Party and the African National Congress have been invited to also address the congress.
