The Ad Hoc Committee on the General Intelligence Laws Amendment Bill today adopted its programme that details how it will work pending amendments on the public participation process.
 
In the next two weeks the committee is expected to receive briefings on the Bill from the State Security Agency, Office of the Chief State Law Advisor, National Intelligence Co-ordinating Committee, Office for the Interception Centres, Designated Judge for Interception, South African Police Service – Crime Intelligence, Defence Intelligence and the Office of the Inspector-General of Intelligence.
 
The committee has resolved to conduct oral public hearings in five provinces that have an urban and rural footprint from January 2024. The proposed provinces include Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape. The committee has also resolved to use other public participation avenues in addition to oral hearings to ensure it engages with as many citizens as it can.
 
The committee which was established in terms of the National Assembly Rule 253 to consider and report on the General Intelligence Laws Amendment Bill will hold all its meetings in the open and exercise its powers as set out in the National Assembly Rule 167.
 
The committee is expected to report back to the National Assembly on 1 March 2024.
