ActionSA urges Walter Sisulu University to uphold principles of good financial accountability which are central to the effective management of universities.
Walter Sisulu University’s acting Vice Chancellor and the acting Senior Manager in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor got suspended over allegations of corruption. It is concerning to witness two senior executives receiving suspensions over allegations of corruption, when they should be championing good governance at this iconic institution.
In the past decade, WSU has made significant improvements in the governance of the institution after it emerged from being put under administration by the Minister of Higher Education.
ActionSA trusts that the recent suspensions won’t bring about regress in the governance of WSU and urges the current management of the university to not be deterred by these suspensions and continue to uphold sound governance principles in the execution of their responsibilities.
ActionSA will monitor developments around the ongoing investigations around this matter and advocate for justice to be served in favour of the university’s more than thirty thousand students who have a right to continue with their studies in an environment that is stable and supports conducive learning, research and community service.
