As of May 2026, there are 3,289,906 voters registered on the Western Cape voters' roll for the Local Government Elections 2026 in November. In total, across different councils, there are 526 political parties registered for the election.
This was revealed in a briefing by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to the Standing Committee on Premier and Constitutional Matters today.
The IEC further set out extensive measures to ensure that the election’s integrity is above reproach. This includes ensuring all electoral staff are properly trained, equipped, and vetted in a process that includes the Municipal Political Liaison Committee, comprising different political parties. All votes will be counted and verified at one of the 1,623 voting stations across the province.
The DA in the Western Cape encourages all residents to make sure they are registered correctly, as you can only vote where you are registered. It is especially important to check your registration status, as the IEC confirmed there have been several changes because voting districts have been added, increasing the number of wards in the province from 406 to 416.
Citizens can check their registration status on the IEC website, or by going to one of the voting stations, the locations of which are also available on the IEC website, on the coming registration weekend on 21 and 22 June.
Thomas Walters, MPP, DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Premier and Constitutional Matters: “Local Government Elections are crucial to ensuring effective service delivery in your municipality. The IEC's efforts to ensure that the elections run smoothly are encouraging, but the real test will be on the registration weekend and election day.”
“The DA has a proven track record of good service delivery and accountable governance where we govern, while we have seen the near-collapse of municipalities in the province run by other parties. You will only be able to vote for the DA and an effective municipality if you are registered to vote correctly with the IEC, so register as soon as possible online, or at a voting station on registration weekend.”
