- 20 Years of the African Court: Protect the Court, Protect the People1.01 MB
At the time of the publication, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights celebrates its 20th anniversary.
On 2 July 2006, the first judges were appointed. This report takes stock of the Court’s first two decades, examining both the successes achieved and challenges faced in fulfilling its ambitious mandate of protection and promotion of human rights across the African continent.
Limited access to the Court, especially for individuals and NGOs, remains one of the Court’s biggest challenges. Low implementation of the Court’s decisions is another one. Nevertheless, the Court has established itself as an important regional human rights court over its 20 years of operations.
It has delivered around 150 judgments on merits, including several landmark decisions which are highlighted in this report.
