President Jacob Zuma has promised the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) he will serve two terms in office, its general secretary said on Thursday.

"We know the President said only one term, but we have engaged with him," Zwelinzima Vavi told reporters in Johannesburg.

"It is no longer on the table. He will run two full terms."

Vavi was briefing the media after Cosatu's central executive committee meeting and was replying to a question on Cosatu's preferred candidates for African National Congress party leadership to be elected in 2012.

"The issue of succession does not even arise. That discussion is not arising in 2012 as far as we are concerned," said Vavi.
