Depu ty President Jacob Zuma is expected to brief Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala today, on the position of the Burundi ceasefire negotiations.

Mr Zuma, who was facilitating the negotiations, jetted off to Uganda yesterday, to update President Museveni in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Great Lakes Regional Initiative on Burundi.

The briefing follows 17 days of negotiations between the Burundian transitional government and the rebel group, the Defence of Democracy-Forces for the Defence of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) of Pierre Nkurunziza, held in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, aimed at ending a decade long civil war that claimed more than 250 000 lives.

At the Regional Summit held in Tanzania last month, the Great Lakes Heads of State Summit on Burundi gave a directive to all the parties to conclude a ceasefire agreement within 30 days or face action from regional leaders.

'The parties missed the 7 November deadline to reach an agreement and the leadership of the region now has to provide direction on the way forward,' said the Presidency in a statement.

Deputy President Zuma is expected back in the country this afternoon - BuaNews.
