President Jacob Zuma has implemented a 7% across-the-board increase in the remuneration of public office bearers for the 2009/10 financial year.

This followed on the recommendations made by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers, which on Thursday, said an 8% across-the-board remuneration increase would be "fair and equitable".

"We appreciate the considerations applied by the commission in determining the 2009/10 remuneration for public office bearers. In light of the current economic situation, and the pressure on government finances, I have decided to adjust downwards the percentage recommended by the commission," said Zuma.

Once implemented, the remuneration increases would be backdated to April 1, 2009.
