"We won Harare Central by 2 707 votes against 1 304 for (the ruling) Zanu-PF," said Remus Makuwaza, the elections director of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
State radio confirmed the results.
The two day-poll coincided with another by-election in a rural constituency in the northwest of the southern African country expected to be retained by President Robert Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF.
Elections were also held for 222 council seats and seven mayoral positions in 21 towns and cities.
Results for those elections were still sketchy by midday yesterday, although Makuwaza said the MDC was leading by four out of five wards counted so far in the Harare satellite town of Chitungwiza, an opposition stronghold. – Sapa.
