Ephraim Mateyo, who has been credited with reducing crime, was quoted in newspapers as saying he was embarrassed by graft in the police force.
"I believe we are leading in the race that will send us into jail," Mateyo was quoted by The Post newspaper as telling traffic police officers whom he accused of systematically taking bribes from drivers they stopped.
Mwanawasa has become a favourite of the International Monetary Fund and other western donors who have extended billions of dollars in debt relief in the wake of his crackdown on government spending and launch of a massive anti-graft drive.
