The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] welcomes the decision by the department of Basic Education to review the publication of Matric results in newspapers as reported in the Citizen yesterday. This comes after theNational Committee of YCLSA resolved to challenge this abnormality.
As an organisation we shall continue to raise matters of National interest given our strategic location within the mass democratic movement. Due to our influence in society and the relevance of our views, we have no doubt that the brutal and meaningless practice of humiliating matric learners will come to an end.
We call upon the representatives from provinces, who will be attending the consultative meeting called by the department to have at heart the interest of hundreds and thousands of learners of our country who had been unnecessarily victimised by this malpractice.
It is our view that the publication of matric results bears a contributing factor on the narrow performance assessment instruments utilised to benchmark secondary education performance on the basis of achievements and/ or non-achievements merely at grade twelve and thereby defocusing attention onother lower grades which have a determining factor on performance at grade twelve.
In this we pledge to openly appeal to all stakeholders in secondary education, including School Governing Bodies, the Congress of South African Students, community based organisations and Learners Representative Councils, to partake in discussions that will give rise to the acknowledgement of confidentiality as regards the publication of matric results.
