The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] welcomes the pronouncement by the President Jacob Zuma that the ANC will investigate all incidents were lists of local government elections were manipulated and legitimate and popularly elected candidates were replaced.
This, the president said, may even include the ANC removing these candidates and conducting by-elections in order to ensure that the will of the people is respected. As the YCL we believe that this should be an Alliance inclusive process, and that those who are responsible for undermining the will of our people, including those who failed to register candidates, should be brought to book.
As the YCL, during our election campaign, have heard how some of the regional and provincial leaders of the ANC have used undemocratic and bureaucratic means to manipulate lists in order to satisfy factional interests. This has led to communities opting to support independent candidates or threatening not to go and vote. It has also led to widespread protests with people being dissatisfied with their will being undermined.
We have also witnessed gross exclusion of some ANC members from lists on the basis of their membership of either the SACP or COSATU. This falls squarely within an agenda foreign to the movement and only reminiscent of the pre-Polokwane ANC leadership, that of undermining the unity and cohesion the Alliance.
The YCL calls on all its disciplined cadres to go all out and campaign for an overwhelming ANC election victory. As the YCL, we do not see this as a victory or loss by certain individuals, but by the collective. The YCL sees the call by the ANC President as a step forward in ensuring that we attain victory.
We are appalled by attempts to try and individualise the 2009 electoral victory as all our structures of the alliance contributed significantly in that campaign, and see as mischievous attempts to already try and blame certain individuals all in the interest of decampaigning them for the 2012 ANC elective national conference. A divided ANC and Alliance will never win the elections.
