The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) has noted the hands on approach taken by the Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi on the issue of HIV/Aids. The Minister has recently launched the “first things first” campaign in institutions of higher learning encouraging first year students to test and know their status. Young people between the ages between 18 and 25 are prone to be at a higher risk of contracting HIV/Aids. The Campaign was launched at the University of the Witwatersrand yesterday and students came out in numbers in support of the campaign.

The Minister has initiated campaigns which target young people mostly. Recently there has been a public debate on compulsory testing of students in high school given the high level of teenage pregnancy in schools. As the YCLSA we believe that such initiatives will create awareness amongst the youth and more importantly curb the stigma around HIV/Aids in our society.
The proposed compulsory testing campaign in high schools is a critical matter which should be engaged by all stakeholders involved including students themselves.

It’s a very sensitive issue but with the collective effort of teachers, parents and the department, it could prove to be a success. However prior to its implementation the Health Department together with the Department of basic education should ensure that well-trained practitioners including teachers and parents will be able to deal with the psychological effects should a student test positive.

As the YCLSA we believe that such campaigns will assist in curbing the spread of HIV/Aids and for young people to act responsibly with their lives. All areas of society where young people are visible should be targets. We call upon young people around the country in institutions of higher learning to go out in numbers and know their status so as to get help early.
