The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] notes with concerns the shortage of teachers in our country as revealed by the Centre for Development and Enterprise (CED) on it Research paper.
This comes merely a week after our successful Second University Based Branch Summit in Durban. The summit deliberated on this dilemma which is particularly glaring on Maths, Science, Nursing and agricultural field. We attribute this challenge on the closing down of Teacher Colleges by government in the resent past.
As YCLSA we shall continue to engage the Minister of Higher Education and Training on the need for a speedy reopening of Teachers’ Colleges, Nursing Colleges and Colleges of Agriculture. As their absence can only assist in mitigating the scourge of lack of adequate and well trained teachers. It is a farce that we closed teacher and nursing colleges whilst we increased the number of police academies and training colleges
The YCL supports the Department of Basic Education's Funza Lushaka bursary scheme, which offers bursaries to university students who study towards an education degree. We call upon the Department of education on both basic and higher level to make teaching and education fashionable, pay decent wages and professionalise the teaching profession.
