The FIFA World Cup trophy would stay on the African continent, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said on Friday.

The tournament was a "turning point in the history of the world" because it was the first time that it would be hosted in Africa as well as the first time it would remain on the continent, Motlanthe said at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The winner's trophy - which was now travelling in a stylish brown case custom-made by French fashion and handbag house Louis Vuitton - was presented to him by FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

A joyful Motlanthe held it high, smiling and looking proud.

Motlanthe said that government had learned during the preparation for the World Cup, that by working as a team, anything could be achieved.

"I hope this won't be lost to us as we face other problems," he said.

He thanked FIFA for its support amidst a cloud of pessimism.

Blatter added that jealousy was the main reason why people had criticised the country's capability in hosting the tournament, which starts in a week.

"Everything is well done and preparations are in place," said Blatter.

He expected the soccer teams to enjoy their stay in South Africa because of the warm hospitality and hoped that former president Nelson Mandela would be at the grandstand for kick-off next Friday when Bafana Bafana takes on Mexico.

Local Organising Committee (LOC) CEO Danny Jordaan, Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies attended the handover ceremony.

Dlamini-Zuma, after she requested the honour, had a chance to hold the trophy.

Union Buildings staff dressed in Bafana Bafana regalia took turns posing with the trophy. The mood was jubilant with people jumping and blowing vuvuzulas.

Friday marked the last "Football Friday" before kick-off and saw national flags of participating teams draped along the Union Buildings driveway and a statue of the 2010 mascot erected at its entrance.

Motlanthe would host a soccer match played by Cabinet members later on Friday.

The trophy would now make its way to Soweto for a two day public display at the Dlamini Multipurpose Centre before being locked away in a secure secret location.

It would then be seen during the final match at Soccer City, where it would be awarded to the new soccer world champions.
