The multisectoral HIV/Aids program is being funded as a follow-up to the IDA-financed Ghana Aids Response Fund project (GARFUND).
Its aim is to maintain infection rates at current levels among vulnerable groups and curb further spread of HIV/AIDS among the general population.
It is also aimed at mitigating the impact of the pandemic on the health and socio-economic systems, as well as on the infected and affected persons by promoting healthy life-styles, especially in the area of sexual and reproductive health.
“The continued participation of the bank in the fight against HIV/Aids in Ghana is critical in achieving Ghana's objectives of reducing new HIV/Aids/STI transmission and mitigating the impact of HIV/Aids-related morbidity and mortality”, said World Bank task team leader Laura Rose.
“Preventive efforts need to be continued and scaled up in order to force a reversal in the spread of the pandemic in the country,” she added.
The Multi-Sectoral HIV/AIDS project will focus on policy, advocacy and enabling environment; a national HIV/Aids and STI policy; coordination and management of the decentralized response; mitigating the social, cultural, legal and economic impacts; prevention and behavior-change communication; treatment, care and support programs; and resource mobilisation and funding arrangements.
The project will promote the sector-wide concept and focus on harmonising the various on-going and future programs while strengthening Ghana Aids Commission's capacity to efficiently monitor and coordinate resources and activities in support of the National Strategic Framework II (NSF II).
The project is a collaborative and harmonised effort with all the major development partners in HIV/Aids in Ghana, the World Bank said.
