Andiswa Ndoni has been appointed president of the Black Lawyers'Association (BLA), the first woman to hold the title, the association announced on Wednesday.

Ndoni has been a member of the BLA's national executive committee for six years and, the association said, has worked in training and capacity building for black lawyers. She founded the Practical Law School in East London and headed the BLA's legal education centre. She was recently also appointed to the executive of Teba Bank.

The association's objectives include increasing the number of black lawyers, providing continuing legal education and services to the black community and to expose black lawyers to areas of law from which they were previously excluded.
