The ANC in the Western Cape suspended five senior regional members on Tuesday for undermining party unity and discipline.

The newly elected provincial chairman, Mcebisi Skwatsha, said the five members included Mbulelo Ncedana and Ebrahim Sawant, the axed secretary and deputy secretary of the ANC's Dullah Omar region in the Western Cape.

"Noting the unbecoming behaviour of ANC members in the Western Cape who, through their statements and actions are undermining organisational cohesion, unity and discipline, the PWC [provincial working committee] has decided to summarily suspend [them]," a statement read.

Those suspended include Ncedane, Sawant, Brian Heber, Onel de Beer, and Moegamat Majiedt.

Ncedana was among the organisers of a public meeting of disgruntled ANC members in Langa, Cape Town, on Saturday which was addressed by former ANC chairman Mosiuoa Lekota.

"We are aware of the confusion created by people who continually undermine the structures and leadership of the ANC and speaking on behalf of the ANC at meetings not arranged or sanctioned by the ANC," the PWC said in the statement."

"The ANC in the Western Cape will not allow its structures to be used for purposes of undermining and betraying the organisation."

Lekota and the former deputy defence minister Mluleki George were suspended by the ANC on Monday night.

Lekota, who resigned as defence minister when former president Thabo Mbeki was axed, has said he may start a breakaway political party.

A provincial conference in the Western Cape about two weeks ago showed evidence of divisions in the ANC when Ncedana organised a separate meeting of several hundred people, claiming fraud in the way in which delegates had been decided.

The group said it asked the ANC's national leadership to intervene but that it had received no response.

The provincial conference elected pro-Jacob Zuma leaders and disbanded the executive committee of the Dullah Omar region, which includes the Cape metro and has about 30,000 members in 85 branches.
