The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape has condemned the pre-election violence which led to two buses being burnt in Cape Town.

Attributing the violence to hooligans taking advantage of the recent candidate list problems in the party, the ANC said no party structures had protested on Wednesday.

"These are acts of individuals who are taking advantage of problems we have had with the candidate list process to perpetuate a state of chaos that allows them to loot and rob innocent people," spokesperson Yonela Diko said on Thursday.

A section of the N2 highway in Cape Town was closed on Wednesday due to protests.

Protesters burnt two buses and allegedly stoned passing cars. The protesters were said to be unhappy about the ward candidate process.

The N2 incoming was opened at about 20:00 on Wednesday.

Two people were arrested for robbing motorists during the protests.

Diko said all their structures were busy with campaigning.

"We rebuke this growing trend of hooligans who jump into bandwagon of protests and begin to commit crime, and we want law enforcement to deal with such individuals as such," he said.
