Congress of SA Trade Unions general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has promised to step down from his position in 2012.

"It has been a long, long time comrades," Vavi told delegates at the 10th Cosatu conference in Midrand on Thursday.

"I cannot stay forever."

Vavi has been the general secretary of Cosatu for 10 years and has held full-time positions in the organisation since 1988.

He said that his leaving was necessary for the organisation.

"The organisation needs ideas, it needs young people to take it where it is going."

The ruling ANC has its leadership conference in 2012 and Vavi said he would not refuse a position if selected.
