YOUTH MUST BE BUILDERS NOT BREAKERS: CELEBRATING A PROVINCE YOUNG AT HEART
Today we celebrate the youth of the Western Cape, and the youth of South Africa. Youth Day though is so much more than a celebration of age - it is a celebration of strength, of character, and of a province and a country bursting with potential.
Just over a week ago Parliament heard about a conversation between the President and a young high school student. This young girl said that she understood it was wrong to expect government to uplift the youth and provide the things that young people want so badly to have. We shouldn't expect that, she said but asked instead what can government do to help us achieve these things for ourselves? It was a very important question and the answer must be heard not only by the youth, but by all South Africans, young and old.
The most important role for any government is to provide its people of all ages with the tools they need to be builders. Builders of growth, builders of jobs, builders of hope and builders of human dignity. We are building a province in the Western Cape which provides a home for coloured, white, black and Indian youth, and no one should ever again feel excluded or like a second-class citizen in this province. I want you to join hands with our Government to build the Western Cape.
