WESTERN CAPE TARGETS FOR ANTI-RETROVIRAL TREATMENT: 83% WITHIN 5 YEARS
Exactly 169 years ago Cape Town and South Africa had cause for great celebration. On 1 December 1834 it was announced that slavery was to be abolished. 169 years later we are celebrating another important stride forward in the battle to free our people from the shackles of AIDS - the launch of South Africa's first Public-Private HIV/AIDS treatment site.
It is particularly significant that this launch takes place in the Western Cape less than two weeks after the national Cabinet approved the comprehensive national treatment plan. The impact of this approval, coupled with the announcement by the national Minister of Finance of another R1,9 billion to fund anti-retroviral treatments, and the recent drop in treatment prices to just more than R80 per patient per month means that we are now in a position of strength - ready to make serious in-roads into the treatment of people living with AIDS.
