PREMIER CALLS FOR CAPE REGIONAL BROADCASTS
The SABC as our public broadcaster, has the potential to be the single most important instrument of positive change, nation-building, education and development in South Africa. Equally, it has unmatched potential to discriminate, misinform, indoctrinate and polarise our people. The thin dividing line between these two pictures is the quality, substance, and implementation of the SABC's editorial policies.
In view of the importance of these policies it is critical for every South African to have the chance to make their voice heard on these issues. For too many years, our people have regarded the public broadcaster with cynicism - either as a mouth-piece for the government of the day, or an ineffectual state institution paralysed by the fear of giving offence. For most South Africans the strong perception of the SABC has been of an organisation led by shadowy executives making editorial decisions in the halls of power. Clearly this is not the SABC which stands before us today.
