Title: M van Schalkwyk: NNP: Securing The Next Ten Years for Our Children
This year we are placing great emphasis on celebrating our first decade of democracy. We remember together the long road we traveled to get to this point in our history.
But we should not only look back and remember the dream we had ten years ago - we should look forward and dream about the next decade.
Those of you who, like me, have young children, will wonder what South Africa will be like when our children are grown.
What are the hopes and dreams we as parents have for our children? What are the choices we can make now, to ensure a better place and a better future for them? These are surely the same questions that people ask themselves in areas of conflict around the world, like the Middle East. Every time I see the conflict in that part of the world I am thankful for the courage of leaders like FW de Klerk and Nelson Mandela. Because of them, our children live in peace with their fellow South Africans.
But peace, reconciliation and nation building are not all we should strive for in South Africa. As long as one child in this country goes to bed hungry. As long as one women is raped, as long as one farmer is killed, as long as one person loses his or her job because of the colour of his or her skin, we cannot sit back and say that our work is done.
The country we create now, will determine the country our children will live in ten years time. What are we willing to sacrifice to create a better life for our children?
Governments have political power, they build houses, they build hospitals, they create the environment for economic growth. Small parties like South Africa’s current opposition can only sit back, watch, and criticise.
The NNP refuses to do this. The NNP is determined to be part of the future of this country. We are South Africans, and we want our country to work for us.
We and our children have a stake in South Africa and our future. The problems we face are not only the ANC’s problems or the NNP’s problems – they are South African problems and we should all be involved in their solutions.
If all South Africans are not involved in the governing of our country, we will create new groups of disadvantaged people. Your children’s opportunities should not be limited because of the colour of their skin, their religion, their cultural background or the language they speak.
We cannot rest before we make our Bill of Rights, as enshrined in the Constitution, a living and breathing reality for our country and our children.
This is your country too. Vote NNP and ensure your fair share.
