Title: Van Schalkwyk: New Year's message
NEW YEAR'S MESSAGE FROM THE WESTERN CAPE PREMIER, MARTHINUS VAN
SCHALKWYK, ON 29 DECEMBER 2003
A NEW YEAR OF HOPE AND CELEBRATION
Although every festive season should be a time of peace, happiness
and celebration the dawning of this New Year brings with it cause
for even greater joy - the fact that our province, our people and
our country will join together in 2004 to celebrate a remarkable
milestone - the tenth anniversary of our new democracy.
For the communities of the Western Cape these celebrations will
hold even greater significance. As a province which has, in the
past, been perceived by some as standing apart from the rest of
South Africa, the 2004 celebrations will firmly underscore the
stability and renewed commitment to South African pride that our
NNP/ANC Coalition of Hope has brought to all communities in the
Western Cape.
2003 has been a year of achievements for our people and our
province. From World Championship performances, to major new
tourism and business developments, to real victories in the fight
against challenges like HIV/Aids, crime and poverty. It has also
been a year not without difficulties - many of our communities have
faced obstacles like flooding, droughts, an upsurge in violence
against children and a national currency whose renewed strength has
seriously challenged our export-related industries. On the whole
though, 2003 will be remembered as a year in which the people of
the Western Cape met these challenges head-on, building our
province in partnership.
On behalf of our Government and the people of the Western Cape I
would like to thank the men and women of our public service for
their ongoing efforts during 2003 to make a positive difference in
all our communities. I would like particularly to pay tribute to
the members of our critical services whose vigilance over this
festive season helps to ensure the safety and security of all
within our borders.
The year ahead holds great promise. In the Western Cape, 2004 will
bring an election with a guarantee of continued stability in the
Provincial Government, and a renewed focus on real delivery and
service excellence. Together we will continue to grow the success
of our World Class Province that cares for all its people.
To each and everyone in the Western Cape, to our visitors from
abroad and the rest of the country, I wish you a prosperous,
peaceful, happy and blessed New Year.
