Title: M van Schalkwyk: Human Rights Day
SPEECH BY WESTERN CAPE PREMIER, MARTHINUS VAN SCHALKWYK, DURING THE
WESTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL CELEBRATIONS OF HUMAN RIGHTS DAY, Athlone
Stadium, Cape Town, 22 March 2004
No Greater Achievement than Building a Home for all in the Western
Cape
Today we are here to celebrate freedom and human rights
Today we are here to remember courage
Today we are here to give thanks for sacrifice
Today we come together as the people and the communities of the
Western Cape
We are one family, one people, united under one South African
patriotism.
Visitors to the Western Cape often wonder how we have built a
province that is so successful. They see our people and our
communities working together, and they ask us how we have made this
possible.
The answer is simple. It's the same reason that we are all here
today and it is our most valuable achievement. It's because Western
Cape is now a home for all the people. Die Wes-Kaap is 'n tuiste
vir al die mense. INtshona Koloni likhaya lomntu wonke. Abantsundu,
abamhlophe, abebala, namaNdiya, amadoda, nabafazi.
This morning we saw the real proof of how far we have come since
1994. Our Freedom Parade brought thousands of people, coloured,
white, black and Indian, from their homes, down Klipfontein Road to
these celebrations. From Gugulethu in the East, to Hanover Park on
the flats, to Rondebosch in the West, Klipfontein Road is like a
ribbon of steel that joins our communities in the same way that the
NNP/ANC Coalition of Hope joins our people.
Gister was Nasionale Menseregtedag. Voorheen het dit as
Sharpeville-dag bekend gestaan.
toekoms.
In ten years we have had great successes. Many more people have
water and electricity. Many more people have houses. There are more
clinics and more schools. But it is not enough. We will work
together to make sure the next ten years are even better. We owe it
to our children.
Too many people think that human rights are just words on paper.
Too many people believe that days like this one are just good
excuses to be on holiday. They are wrong.
Our people and our NNP/ANC Government knows that human rights are
really about freedom.
The freedom of a young child to play and learn without pain of
hunger in her belly.
The freedom of a mother to walk out of her door, down her street
and through the park without fear of rape and murder at every
step.
These are the freedoms and human rights that we celebrate
today.
This is why our NNP/ANC Government has put another 6000 police on
our streets and why we have just celebrated the safest festive
season in ten years.
This is why we will work to create at least 100 000 permanent new
jobs for the Western Cape in the next 5 years, to attract another
R5 billion in new investment, and to create another 120 000
short-term jobs in our public works programmes.
Dit is hoekom die NNP en die ANC sal saamwerk in Regering om die
Wes-Kaap te bou tot 'n werklike tuiste vir almal, 'n
W
