Title: Van Schalkwyk: Hand-over of cheque to ICC Cricket World Cup
EXTRACT FROM REMARKS BY WESTERN CAPE PREMIER MARTHINUS VAN SCHALKWYK SPEAKING AT THE HAND-OVER OF A CHEQUE FROM THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT OF THE WESTERN CAPE TO THE ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP, Newlands Cricket Stadium, 10 December 2002
With a cast of thousands, a budget of millions, and a potential television audience of billions, the Cricket World Cup will be South Africa's time to shine.
The Government of the Western Cape is absolutely committed to bringing great events to our province as part of our vision to build a World Class Province, which cares for all of its people. The Cricket World Cup is one of the greatest global sporting events and by hosting the spectacular opening ceremony next February in Cape Town; we are saying to the world that ours is a province and a country, which can compete with the very best that the world has to offer. It will be the biggest and best opening ceremony of any African sporting event ever - and represents a massive opportunity for South Africa to showcase our unique spirit, our cultural diversity, and our rainbow nation.
It is my great pleasure to present to Dr Ali Bacher, and the ICC Cricket World Cup, this cheque for R2 million in support of this exceptional event. 2002 has been a particularly good year for our province in terms of growth in international tourist arrivals - with a 15% increase over 2001, but we know that there is much greater potential, which lies untapped. Events of this scale and this calibre will do much to spread the good name and enhance the reputation of the Western Cape as a tourism, sporting, and business destination of distinction.
As we approach the final few weeks before the start of the event, I want to take this opportunity to thank every volunteer, every staff member and every person who is helping us to make this dream a reality. On behalf of the Western Cape and the people of our country we say to the world that we look forward to welcoming you to our home.
