Title: Van Schalkwyk: Allegations re mass grave in Laingsburg
STATEMENT BY PREMIER MARTHINUS VAN SCHALKWYK: LAINGSBURG ALLEGATIONS
If there is sufficient reason or suspicion that anything should be investigated relating to threats to the dignity of any person or community in the Western Cape, our Provincial Government will not hesitate to do so.
It is however important that before we take any decision with regard to allegations we first establish if there are grounds for the suspicions, allegations and rumours which have been doing the rounds.
With regard to the allegations of a mass grave in Laingsburg, this issue will be discussed at the first meeting of the Western Cape Cabinet in the new year - scheduled for 29 January.
Minister Dowry, our provincial Minister for Local Government, has been instructed to liaise with the Mayor of Laingsburg and to obtain the following information from him:
a. Any sworn affidavits that may assist us in taking a decision;
b. The names and addresses of any persons with whom we can conduct interviews; and
c. Any additional information that may have bearing on this issue.
