The US State Department today called for all sides in Liberia to respect a ceasefire agreement broken by rebel fighting.

"The US condemns all violations of the ceasefire and calls upon all combatants (to) stop fighting immediately, spare the lives and property of innocent civilians and respect their obligations under the ceasefire," spokesperson Richard Boucher said in a statement.

"The US regrets that no armed party has met fully their obligations to cooperate with the Joint Verification Team to help implement the ceasefire.

"All parties must do so immediately if they are to have any international credibility in building a peaceful, democratic and prosperous Liberia," he said.

Liberia's main rebel group, Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (Lurd), pushed toward the capital Monrovia, after clashing with government troops in violation of a ceasefire signed last week, according to Liberian officials.- Sapa-AFP.
