The U.S. State Department is pleased to announce the selection of the Ambassador of the United States to South Africa, the Honorable Donald H. Gips, as the recipient of the 2010 Sue M. Cobb Award for Exemplary Diplomatic Service.
The Sue M. Cobb Award for Exemplary Diplomatic Service is presented to a non-career ambassador who has used private sector leadership and management skills to make a significant impact on bilateral and multilateral relations and has done so in a manner that best reflects the Foreign Service culture of uncommon commitment in carrying out United States foreign policy through proactive diplomacy. The award is made possible by the generosity of Ms. Sue M. Cobb, former U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica.
In selecting Ambassador Gips for this award, the Committee noted his "energy, innovation and focus" in building an atmosphere of trust with senior South African officials. The Committee added, "Ambassador Gips has been able to leverage increased bilateral cooperation across the range of U.S. foreign policy interests, from HIV/AIDS, education and climate change, to energy and trade and investment."
Ambassador Gips will be honored in a ceremony in Washington DC in November 2010.
