The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has applauded the announcement by Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa that the free rollout of anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) will begin at five treatment centres from April 1, 2004.

“We welcome that fact that this historic step forward will extend the lives of an estimated 10 000 people by March 2005, give them the opportunity to enjoy a full life, where they can work, look after their children and play an active part in society,” said acting Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven.

The union has urged the province to extend the rollout to the 18 other treatment sites announced by the MEC as quickly as possible and demand that other provinces speedily follow Gauteng’s lead.
