A new appeal for armed groups in the eastern region of the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to release all children remaining in their ranks has been launched by the top United Nations official in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

After meeting with a group of twenty child soldiers recently released from local militia in North Kivu, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for the DRC, Alan Doss, called for the return of all children fighting in the war zone.

Doss explained that the recruitment of children by armed forces was a war crime and a crime against humanity. Doss added that the use of child soldiers "literally destroys the future of this country".
