Britain yesterday played down a report it would boycott a forthcoming Commonwealth summit if Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is invited.

The report originated with New Zealand Foreign Minister Phil Goff.

The Foreign Office in London said that with Zimbabwe currently suspended from the councils of the Commonwealth, it had no reason to suppose that Mugabe would be going to the December meeting in Abuja, Nigeria.

"As far as we are aware, he has not been invited so that should not arise.

The indication has been from the Nigerians that he will not be invited," a spokesperson said. – Sapa-DPA.
