The United Democratic Movement (UDM) condemns the violence which broke out at Marikana, Wonderkop, in North West yesterday. This is a very sad day for South Africa.
We convey our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones in the shootout.
It is clear that the current negotiators have failed dismally to resolve the Lonmin Mine industrial dispute.
Independent mediators, capable of ensuring an immediate cessation of all hostilities, are now required to help bring the parties back to the negotiating table.
The UDM believes that the Kings, Chiefs and religious leaders of the different mineworkers should now be called in to mediate in this industrial dispute, as it is unlikely that the mineworkers would be willing to listen to the same Government that has brutally massacred them.
We also believe that the Human Rights Commission should be called in to facilitate this mediation process with immediate effect.
