Finally the last day of the bail hearing by hip hop artist Molemo "Jub-Jub" Maarohanye and Themba Tshabalala has arrived. We have witnessed the chaos with altercations between protesters and the police. It is reported that a large police contingent was again expected outside the court building today.

Emotions are running high and we commiserate with the community; we are equally outraged by what happened. However, the image of stone-throwing students confronted by police using rubber bullets and a water cannon is disturbing. It is unsettling when a young child holds a poster that calls for the killing of another human being.

We feel strongly that the accused must not receive any special dispensation; they must face the full might of the law. We grieve with the mothers of the children who died, we support the community in their outcry, but we call on our learners to go back to school.

Two wrongs don't make a right - please don't let these circumstances detract from the most important time in your life. Don't throw stones, don't damage property, don't miss school. You have made your point! We understand your outrage, but please go back to school.
