It is reported that one of the warring factions Congress of the People has
"disbanded" the leadership structures of their rival in three provinces. We
have also noted that the IFP has yet again 'given birth' to another
political party, the National Freedom Party (NFP). These recent developments
on the South African Political landscape are a continuation of a worrying
trend; the weakening of opposition parties and their influence.
The IEC has one hundred registered parties at a national level (of which the
NFP appears to be one). Many parties on the ballot paper confuse our
electorate and it splits the vote against the ANC. The UDM believes that the
realignment of the South African political landscape is a process, but any
more infighting within opposition parties, as well as the proliferation of
political parties, will have only one result; it will make the ANC stronger
at the poll.
In the end the UDM sees the electoral landscape shifting to a balance of
power between two strong political parties. In the meantime, we wish Ms
Magwaza-Msibi the best of luck with her goals. The Multi-Party Forum, where
the opposition shares ideas, will surely invite the NFP to participate in
its discussions.
