The United Democratic Movement (UDM) condemns in the strongest possible terms reports about the torture of Marikana protesters who are in police custody. The City Press reported that Marikana protestors in police custody have opened 194 cases against the police for torture and attempted murder.

We call on the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa to confirm whether or not these reports are true.

It once more appears that junior rank officials are allowed to cause irreparable harm to the police service and our society with impunity.

We also call on the Minister to allow family members to bring their medical doctors and lawyers to the police stations to conduct an independent assessment of the veracity of these allegations.

We need to root out police brutality in South Africa.
