Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:

UASA has declared a formal dispute against employer organisations within the metal and engineering industry in accordance with Annexure E of the Constitution of the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council (MEIBC).

The dispute certificate will be issued following the constitutional provisions of the MEIBC being complied with.

UASA declared the dispute following a deadlock in the national negotiations initiated by the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA); the dispute was declared against all employer parties who took part in the negotiations.

Separate negotiations in which some of the employer parties also took part resulted in a party agreement having been concluded between one industry trade union and an industry employer’s organization, although other interested parties might still accept those terms as well, the terms of that settlement is not aligned with our current mandate as received from our members in the industry.

UASA remains committed to continued unofficial engagements in order to reach an amicable agreement.
