Title: Tshabalala-Msimang: World AIDS Day campaign
MINISTER OF HEALTH, DR MANTO TSHABALALA-MSIMANG NOTES FOR THE KICK OFF OF THE WORLD AIDS DAY GIVING CAMPAIGN, 14 November 2003
Today we mark the start of yet another major initiative by South Africans that seeks to demonstrate that we are a caring nation.
South Africa's theme for World AIDS Day this year is: "I care enough to help, do you". The theme is in line with international theme "Live and Let Live" and it builds on the last year's theme, which was: "I care enough to act". Last year's theme highlighted and broadened care and support elements of our response to HIV and AIDS.
As South Africa we have taken the international struggle against stigma associated with HIV and AIDS further. We are calling on all South Africans not only to accept people who are infected and affected, but also to help them. Giving is an act of both acceptance and of help.
The reason I chose to give items of school uniform is that many of our children - who are bright and capable of attending school - fail to do so because they feel ashamed that their clothing is not suitable for school.
I call on all South Africans - in this spirit of Letsema and guided by the ideals of Ubuntu - to show that you care enough to help. You can do this by going to your nearest Pick 'n Pay store and placing tinned food, toys, school stationery or clothes in the specially marked collection bins.
I know our people can open their hearts and lend a helping hand. Show that you care. No matter how big or small your donation is highly appreciated.
In conclusion, I would like to thank all our partners that have joined us in this campaign.
Pick 'n Pay for assisting with collection and distribution of donations through their national distribution channels.
Red Cross for its commitment to deliver the donations to further network of smaller organisations, which are more difficult to reach. These include community based organisations and small support groups.
The SABC, which has undertaken to inform the public about this campaign and its progress. And to all of you ladies and gentlemen of the media, your presence here today is a much-appreciated contribution to this campaign.
Thank you.
